National Library of Australia
As you would expect from the jewel in the crown of libraries in Australia, the National Library of Australia is the repository of our national treasures.
It is a fantastic resource for Australians and is a treasure trove of well researched, quality e-books on Australia and our Asia Pacific neighbours. Some are available online to be downloaded for free.
Many are beautiful publications with great illustrations and photographs.
To use the collection you need a library card which, if you are an Australian citizen, is easily obtained for the web site. Just type in “getalibrarycard” I the homepage search window
With a library card you can also access it’s interlibrary loan facility.
If you are open to using the National Library of Australia as a source of ebooks you may also be interested in one of the world’s most amazing cultural institutions. The US Library of Congress. Now there’s a labrinyth worth checking out. https://catalog.loc.gov.
How’s this? Under the great Aussie name of Zilch this site is what it says, it costs nothing to get hold of the these hard copy books and magazines. People are giving them away.
The hard part is finding someone giving the books away in your local area. Zilch is a national website so the book of your choosing could be sitting in a box far away.
Still, it’s a nice idea and no doubt there’s a few classics and specialist titles to be found if you are a diligent searcher.
I have to say this, wow, wow, wow! Aside from the classic books there’s the classic narrators that make this collection of audio books extra special, names such as Orson Welles, Sir John Gieguld, Thomas Hardy, Sir Laurence Olivier, David Niven, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and others are among the readers. I could spend the next twenty years going through their collection. There’s great women authors in there, Jane Austen, Emily Dickenson, Charlotte Bronte and others but not many female narrators.
Download hundreds of free audio books, mostly classics, to your MP3 player or computer. Below, you'll find great works of fiction, poetry and non fiction by such authors as Twain, Tolstoy, Hemingway, Orwell, Vonnegut, Nietzsche, Austen, Shakespeare, Asimov, HG Wells & others.
Overdrive is the service Australian libraries use, more than 30,000 of them. You need to sign up, download the app and join your local library. A library card is free to virtually any resident Australian who applies.
What a great resource
