Minecraft is now the second best selling video game of all time (Tetris is the biggest). It’s claimed there’s now 150 million players world wide.

Last year’s release to the educational market has taken the popularity of the game to a new level and new credibility.

Microsoft paid more than $2.5billion US when they bought the intellectual property rights to Minecraft in 2014 so don’t expect them to pay so much and give Minecraft away for free.

But they do at least give you the chance to trial the game with the Minecraft Official Demo

After you sign up for a Mohang account you can download the minecraft launcher.

This verision lasts five in-game days. That’s about about 100minutes of bliss in a single world, as well as in survival mode.

At least you can test whether your computer has the speed to play the way you would like. There are few things more frustrating than a slow computer when your brain is working fast.

There are older versions that are free. They are limited compared to the new versions and are played in a web browsers.



You’ve gotta love 4J there’s no mucking around. Just go to the home page, click the game you like and you’ll be playing on line within minutes. They don’t even want you to sign up.

And there’s so many games to choose from, Minecraft comes in many shapes and size.

Multiple gameplay modes are available, including a survival mode in which the player must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to build with and the ability to fly, an adventure mode where players can play custom maps created by other players with certain restrictions.

They get right into detail. Creep Craft for character development and Mine blocks for mining, building and blocking based games. They also cater for girls. There’s Frozen Dressup Minecraft. Apparently your task is to dress up Elsa and Anna and help them choose their accessories. I know a few boys who would like to play too.


Softonic.com used to offer minecraft classic but that’s been discontinued. Instead there are a few alternatives on offer.

Once you get past the rather aggressive MacKeeper pop up ad scroll down the page and you can actually download Minecraft, which they call a sandbox game of creativity and survival.

and Minecraft 2D, a classic version where you can mine,build and explore the lands of a new world.

At its heart Minecraft is building with blocks only in a 3D online environment. Who would think such a simple activity leads to developing imagination and initiative.
